The new NSX cannot into competition

It appears that the on-track performance of the new NSX seems to be a bit of a let down (even with Trofeo R tires). Although, the competition is quite fierce.

Maybe VIR is too much for the NSX?

Maybe C&D couldn’t squeeze everything out of the NSX?

Actually no, its probably the fact that the new NSX is so damn heavy.

I’m much more surprised at the R8's results.

Also, I’m not sure how C&D conducts their official lap times. Does one person set all of the times (like MT) or is it different individuals.

I believe, but am not totally sure, that they utilize a rotation of drivers, so its not one guy, but its the same group of guys in each car.

Different people and if I recall correctly, its all C&D staff. That is what I don’t like about C&D’s lightning lap feature.

To note: R8 weights 83lbs less than NSX, has 37 more HP than NSX and wasnt on Trofeo R tires.

Still weird.

The last NA2 NSX’s weighted 3,197 pounds at most, this new one weighs 3,803 pounds at least. I wonder how much it would weigh without the hybrid system. I thought it would at least be faster than a Ferrari 458, but no. Interesting.

^All the people that have bought a new NSX so far, probably.

I know, you’re waiting for the Type-R version. That’ll show em. We just haven’t seen the full potential yet.

It would make sense if one driver did all of them. The numbers would be skewed if there was a group of them to pull from since each person may be different in their abilities.

So each member sets a lap time in the vehicle and the best time is used in the magazine?

The NSX for this particular test weighed in at 3,854.

As for the hybrid system, it apparently weighs around 286 lbs. So, a non-hybrid NSX would theoretically be around 3,568 lbs.

Source:

The hybrid system contributes 130kg worth of weight to the NSX, amounting to a grand total of about 1800kg.

Also, here are the LaF and P1 for comparisons sake:

The electrical system adds 140kg in weight, the battery being 66kg, yet Ferrari says the car will weigh ‘about 1300kg’ (the Enzo was 1365kg).

The battery pack is heavier than the Ferrari’s at 96kg and bulkier too – stacked vertically at the back of the passenger compartment. The full electrical system adds a claimed 170kg to the P1’s weight, bringing it up to 1395kg ‘dry’, while the total combined power is 903bhp.

NSX has a 1.3 kWh battery pack, so we’ll call that 100 lbs (probably on the high side), and I’ll guess another 100-150 pounds of motors. It’s significant, but it’d still be porky even without the hybrid system. And, the gasoline engine would need to be larger or more heavily turbocharged to make up for its loss, both of which would add weight.

How much weight would be saved it they took out the 9 speed dual clutch and put in, say a 7 speed dual clutch or a 6 7 speed manual? What if we downsize the engine a bit to 3.0L?

Maybe 25-50 pounds if you did both? And downsizing the engine would reduce responsiveness and reliability.

The same person can have a preference, more experience, or be more comfortable in different cars. If you are looking for the optimal performance, why not use multiple drivers and take the top times for each car.

Differences less than a couple of tenths are meaningless with all the inherent variables, so just ignore anything less than a quarter second gap.

I honestly wouldn’t know but it wouldn’t be much.

This vehicle confuses me just like the Jaguar F-Type. Where is all that weight coming from?

Granted, who knows how the RWD Huracan would drive, same with the AMG GT S, but I still think that, for its tier, the New NSX did quite well. Put another way, McLaren is simply untouchable these days. I reckon that at any lap, I can drive the New NSX hard enough to still catch up to the C7 GS, pass the car, and defend like all hell fire.

Maybe it uses more steel in it’s construction that the original?

That’s a good point. I was basing my logic on if the car was only sent out once to do laps. Having multiple laps with multiple drivers wouldn’t be a bad idea.

In this competition, the NSX had additional help of R compound tires. That likely assisted it by at least 2-3 seconds per lap.

I would’ve preferred the NSX to have been tested as-is from the factory.

The R8 performance was let down by its Pirelli P Zero tires.

I still think that the New NSX did well for its tier. But only just well enough.

And in the end, I can still race a New NSX there and I’d be well hanging on to the 570S’ trumpet.
